Hello, parents-to-be. My name is Sara Nassar and I was delivered by a midwife. Ever since I was young, I knew I wanted to work in maternity care, but I wasn’t sure which profession would suit me. It was at secondary school that I first came across the profession of midwifery, and I immediately felt that it was the right fit for me.
After completing my studies, I worked mainly in Amsterdam, the city where I also live. I then made a conscious decision to take a step back to spend time with my family, and was blessed with the wonderful experience of motherhood with the birth of my son, Rayan.
What I love so much about my job is that I get to support women and their families during one of the most special times of their lives. From that first positive pregnancy test, full of wonder and sometimes a touch of anxiety, right through to the moment they finally hold their baby in their arms. It never ceases to be special to be part of this unique journey.
I believe it is important for pregnant women to feel heard, seen and at ease, so that there is a safe and supportive environment where there is room for all their questions, wishes and feelings.
Thanks to my Arab background, I am able to empathise deeply with the various cultural customs and expectations surrounding pregnancy and childbirth. I also speak Arabic, which means I can guide and support Arabic-speaking clients in their mother tongue. I find it rewarding to be able to build bridges between different cultures and provide care that is tailored to the personal wishes and background of every pregnant woman.
As well as my work, I enjoy spending time with my family. I also love cooking and baking; I enjoy trying out new recipes and making others happy with something tasty.
