Why does breastfeeding sometimes present challenges?
Despite your best intentions, breastfeeding doesn't always proceed seamlessly. Particularly with your first child, the initial weeks are filled with adjustments and learning curves for both you and your baby. This is perfectly natural. Thankfully, lactation consultants are equipped with invaluable tips and insights to support you. With the right guidance during your postpartum period—from dedicated maternity nurses, midwives, and other professionals—breastfeeding often becomes a smoother journey.
However, breastfeeding might not unfold seamlessly from the outset. Factors such as nipple sensitivity, discomfort, the necessity for pumping, or supplementing feeds may arise. Additionally, the aftermath of a strenuous delivery can sometimes delay milk flow. In such instances, seeking guidance from a lactation consultant can prove invaluable. They offer a wealth of solutions to address these challenges. By collaborating with them, you can navigate these obstacles and steadily progress towards successful breastfeeding.
A lactation consultant steps in when conventional advice and protocols fall short. With a calm and attentive approach, they collaborate with you to understand and address your baby's unique needs and preferences. For instance:
- Sore nipples (when feeding or pumping) or even cracked nipples.
- Not enough or too much milk
- Baby who does not want to take the breast
- Threat of breast infection
- Problems with latching on/position
- Breastfeeding after previous breast surgery
- Previous experience with breastfeeding
- Premature birth
